FAMI
Six Surgical and Medical Mission finished with 7,500 medical
consultations and 280 surgeries. The
FAMI Team led by tireless Niles Perlas (Founder & Chair) with Angelica
Cu (Vice Chair) and socialite civic-minded Marietta Santos was joined by
Makati Medical Mission Group headed by Dr. Victor Gisbert. The FAMI-MMG
joint mission in Bago City was made possible by Ching’s brother Dr. Laennec
Baquiran from Makati and Laoag.
FAMI
performed the surgeries in Bago City Hospital with the Local NGO, Charles
O. Cojuangco Foundation coordinated by
Rio and Georgie Diaz. Congressman Cojuangco’s
staff volunteers, Bago Hospital Staff and La Salle volunteers made the
mission one of the best organized.
After four
days at Negros Occidental, FAMI left for Manila and Marinduque for second
part of its mission. The
Marinduque group of 12 volunteers (14 seater plane) setup one-day free
clinic at the island, seeing 820 medical consultations. They were housed
and received by the Governor Carmencita Reyes and accompanied by her
daughter Dr. Violet Reyes at their ocean beach home.
The Manila
group setup a free clinic and surgery at Ospital Ng Maynila. The Ospital
Ng Maynila was celebrating their anniversary and welcomed FAMI as part of
their program with Unilever, Philippines sponsoring part of the mission.
It was a hectic seven days but in the end all members felt emotionally
fulfilled and privileged to have serves so many needy in the Philippines.
FAMI days
were mostly hard work but at night, many sponsors encouraged us to
continue by sponsoring dinners. These dinners included supporters like
gracious and philanthropic Meldy Cojuangco
who has for the second time welcomed us to her home, our everlasting
friend, Bobby Novenario at his Forbes
Park home. At Negros, our final grand dinner with MMG was hosted by Cong.
Charles Cojuangco at their home in
Hacienda Ballbina Ponteyedra; Bago’s Mayor
Janet Torres’ home and by the Governor.
FAMI
medical and surgical supplies amount to almost $ 850,000. Most of the
medicines and supplies came from Catholic Medical Mission Board,
Interchurch Medical Mission Assistance,
Allegiance
Hospital Supplies, HSS Hospital, Dr. Baquiran, Dr. San Pedro, Dr.
Sitafalwalla
and others. All the supplies
were packed in four weekends with almost 200 volunteers helping and with
Ping Abaya’s help. FAMI
purchased also almost one hundred thousand pesos of medicines. Our airline
transportation was partially sponsored by Philippine Airline Foundation
coordinated by Menchu Sarmiento
And
Leus Perlas sponsored final dinner at Shangri-la Hotel for FAMI and Negros
accommodation

It has taken me a long time to be where I am
and sometimes we forget why we
become doctors and this mission
has reminded me why I became a doctor!

Indeed
the eyes of my heart were opened to the needs of
our

I’ll have tender memories
of the baby I saw

repaired by
our caring surgeons and

This is

“you
know, the important thing is
that
you do what you can – and
if
everyone does just a little
together
we can really get something
done.”
I
think that is the spirit of
this mission
that we should
all
remember when we get
frustrated – if
everyone can do what they
can –
then we can really do
something."
