2004  Opera Night by G. Lara

FAMI launched it’s initial fund raising on October 23, 2004 with a night of Opera, Dinner and Auction to support its 7th Surgical and Medical Mission in Urdaneta City, Pangasinan and Sta. Rosa, Laguna in February 2005.

Over a hundred guests made up of friends, supporters, volunteers and associates, enjoyed the night of arias performed by opera performers and singers while dining on Roasted Rack of Veal.  Listening to the suave vocal solo  rendition from Le Nozze di Figaro, and Rossini’s The Barber of Seville by Baritone Rodrigo Gomez and the melodious high notes numbers by Soprano Ann Elizabeth Jones, gave the guests a feeling of perfect rapture ~ almost like being at The Metropolitan Opera.

The Raffle for the Ruby Necklace, donated by Marietta Santos; and the set of   Pearl Necklace and Earring donated by Niles Perlas generated a feeling of high expectation as the drawing drew near.

When the winners of the silent auction for the pair of svelte black leather boots donated by Donald Pilner Shoes; the Lalique Crystal; an intricately and fully beaded Evening Bag and the Watch donated by Niles and other numerous items were announced, the crowd erupted into jubilation.

FAMI award to Dr. Lestrino Baquiran, one of the two recipients of the Second Humanitarian Award.  The other recipient, Dr. Laennec Baquiran will receive his award in the Philippines on February 19th 2005.  The 2005 Board Recognition Award were also presented to Dr. James Beckman, for his support to FAMI for the past six years ~ it was received for him by his then fiancée and now wife, Jennifer.  The other award was given to Dr. David Lee for his guidance to the high standard of anesthesia.

The Opera Dinner was steered by our able Board Members Angelica Cu, RN (Vice Chair) and Rome Reyes Velayo (in charge of the Auction). All in all, it was an evening full of fun and camaraderie, highlighted by the charitable and humanitarian act of giving and sharing towards a noble cause.

FAMI would like to gratefully acknowledge our benefactor, Mr. Nick Silao and send a heartfelt thank you to all the generous contributors who attended the Opera Dinner, participated in the Auction and especially our friends from as far away as the west coast and the Philippines who sent in their donations.  It was heartwarming to witness and observe the generosity of our friends.

It was indeed a successful fundraising.

FAMI Golf Awareness Team...

... was formed to promote awareness in the US medical community of FAMI's charitable work in the Philippines.  It participates in golf outings as a team to work with other charitable organization in their effort to serve the needy.  FAMI Golf Team expenses are raised separately from FAMI operating or mission fund.

FAMI supported Haribon Tour Golf Outing on July 5, 2002 at Van Cortlandt at the Bronx.

(FAMI Shirts and Golf Balls were donated by FAMI for the fundraising effort.)

In October 2002, FAMI on behalf of Haribon and Ex Castillo, MD donated Php 45,000 to the CHILD Foundation (Received by Dr. Philip Cruz)  from Philippine General Hospital Children Fund.

It has taken me a long time  to  be where I am
and sometimes we forget why we
become doctors and this mission
has reminded me why I became a doctor!
Mathew Bertram, MD 2005

Nothing can prepare you for a mission except to come with an open heart. It is a great feeling helping our fellow human beings. Erin Ford, RN 2003

Indeed the eyes of my heart were opened to the needs of our  people which are overwhelming but FAMI gave us a new day and a new opportunity of leadership through service.”

Angelica Cu, RN  2002

I’ll have tender memories

of the baby I saw

who had congenital bilateral inguinal hernia

repaired by our caring surgeons and anesthesiologists.

This is really a wonderful teamwork. “

Silva Toledo PA, San Diego California 2002

“you know, the important thing is

that you do what you can – and  if everyone does just a little  together we can really get something done.”

I think that is the spirit of this mission that we should

all remember when we get frustrated – if everyone can do what they can – then we can really do something."

Andrew Lee, MD 2001

What I can say is while I don’t think our

efforts will change the world, I am

happy to have changed the lives of a few.”

Natalie Trezza, RN 2000
